The caret goes beyond the end of line
open HiEdit control, type an "a" (or any other character) and press Enter; press Up then Right arrow, watch the caret |

if spaces in the path then file can't be found
if i run HiEditor from commandline with a file as parameter with a space within the parameter then the file can not be found. |

Additionally store absolute paths in session files
my suggestion is to store the absolute path as a fallback when the relative path cannot be loaded, separated with a pipe char. |
